Turning an outdated nonprofit website into a 24/7 adoption engine

Some websites collect dust. This one was collecting friction. After nearly five years without meaningful updates, a local animal rescue league was stuck with an aging website that made it harder for potential adopters, volunteers, and foster families to take action. That mattered, because every extra click, confusing page, or broken path created a real-world bottleneck. Animals were sitting in the facility longer because people could not easily browse available pets, learn more, or submit an inquiry without frustration. The rescue needed more than a facelift. They needed a modern website built to support their mission, reduce friction, and help the right people find the right animals faster.

THE CHALLENGE

The old site was no longer doing the organization any favors. It lacked the structure, functionality, and search visibility needed to support a busy animal rescue in a mobile-first world.

The biggest problems were clear:

  • The website had gone years without meaningful updates.
  • The user experience made it difficult to inquire about adoptable animals.
  • Important conversion paths for adoption, volunteering, and fostering were either weak, outdated, or hard to find.
  • The site was not positioned to compete in organic search for the high-intent terms people actually use when looking to adopt a pet nearby.

For a nonprofit rescue, that kind of friction is not just a marketing problem. It is an operations problem. Fewer inquiries means fewer placements. Fewer volunteers and foster applications means less support. And when those gaps compound, capacity gets strained fast.

THE MISSION

Build a new WordPress website that made it dramatically easier for people to:

  • Browse adoptable animals.
  • Submit adoption inquiries online.
  • Apply to volunteer.
  • Apply to become a foster home.
  • Find the rescue through organic search without relying on paid ads.

The goal was simple: create a better digital experience that could actively support adoptions, community engagement, and long-term discoverability.

POWERS DEPLOYED

This project combined The Architect and The Oracle—web design and SEO—into one unified rescue mission.

We designed and developed a fully rebuilt WordPress website with a structure centered around usability, search visibility, and conversion. The site included custom post types for animals, PetPress integration, streamlined inquiry paths, mobile-friendly layouts, and custom SEO work built around standard best practices for technical setup, on-page optimization, internal linking, content structure, and local-intent search visibility.

Key improvements included:

  • Easy-to-use online adoption inquiry forms.
  • Dedicated volunteer application forms.
  • Dedicated foster home application forms.
  • Easier-to-navigate adoptable animal pages.
  • A cleaner, more intuitive mobile experience.
  • SEO improvements designed to increase visibility for high-intent animal adoption searches.

For rescue organizations, clear pet listings, mobile usability, and direct online application paths are core website best practices because they reduce friction and help move more users from interest to action. PetPress is specifically built for WordPress animal rescue sites and supports sortable animal listings and dedicated detail pages, which made it a strong fit for a more usable adoption experience.

THE HEROIC VICTORY

The site has now been live for more than three years, and the results speak for themselves:

5,000+
Dog adoption inquiries submitted
3,000+
Cat adoption inquiries submitted
2,500+
Volunteer applications
750+
Foster home applications
85,000
Users from organic search (past year)
71.23%
Of total traffic from organic search
250,000+
Pet adoption page views per year
$0
Spent on paid advertising

Even better, the website now ranks #1 for major high-intent keywords such as "dog adoption near me," "cat adoption," "animal rescue," and "animal shelter," giving the organization the kind of visibility it needs to consistently connect with people already searching for exactly what they offer. Because there was no usable analytics setup on the old site, there is no clean pre-redesign benchmark to compare against. But based on post-launch performance and long-term organic visibility, it is reasonable to estimate that Google search acquisition improved by at least 10x to 50x after the rebuild. That estimate should be presented as directional, not audited.

WHY IT WORKED

This project worked because the strategy matched the mission. Instead of treating the website like a brochure, we treated it like infrastructure.

People searching for a dog, cat, rescue, or shelter are often ready to act. So we built a site that made action easier — better animal pages, better forms, better mobile usability, and stronger search visibility. The result was not just more traffic. It was more of the right traffic, finding the right pages, and completing the right actions.

ONGOING IMPACT

The best part of this project is that the website did not produce a short-lived spike. It became a long-term adoption and outreach engine. More than three years after launch, it is still helping the organization attract organic traffic, generate inquiries, and support the real work happening offline every day.

No paid ads. No gimmicks. Just a smarter website, stronger SEO, and a clearer path between a person searching for a pet and an animal finding its next home.
